Scholastic Play-by-Play Classics has two big events on tap for Saturday Jan. 19, featuring some of the best high school teams in the area.
At Archbishop Carroll (Radnor, PA) beginning at 1 p.m., five match-ups are slated to get underway in the Archbishop Carroll Play-by-Classic. The first two games will perhaps draw the biggest crowds, as Friends Central takes on Germantown Academy followed by Haverford and Vaux.
Friends Central presents a lethal senior backcourt consisting of Billy Cassidy and Karonn Davis, while Germantown Academy remains the only unbeaten team in Inter-AC play. The Patriots are led by senior big-man Julian Moore who is coming off a 20-point, 10-rebound performance in Germantown’s latest win.
Haverford features the high-scoring likes of sophomore Shawn Alston, junior Eric Anderson and senior Sema’j Reed. Vaux, of course, is led by the highly-coveted prospect Rysheed Jordan. Jordan, with a few college programs still anxiously awaiting his decision, has dazzled once again this season. Jordan has cut his options down to Temple, St. John’s and UCLA.
Also worth keeping an eye on in the Vaux/Haverford matchup is Vaux point guard Sam Foreman, who played at Haverford last season before transferring to Vaux this past fall. Foreman’s certainly going to want to show off against his former squad.
The 4:15 game between Williamsport (Pa.) and Shipley will also feature a number of Division-I bound players. Williamsport junior Isaiah Washington is a Penn State commit, while Shipley senior center Zac Tillman is headed to Monmouth next year. The Gators also boast a talented sophomore guard in Quamier Johnson as well as senior sharpshooter Matt Rodden.
Host Archbishop Carroll plays at 6pm against Sanford (Del.), and the hometown Patriots have a lot of talent on a young squad. Sophomores Derrick Jones and Nick Young have both been playing very well of late, and 2013 point guard Yosef Yacob is headed to Binghamton next year. They won’t have an easy task ahead of them, as Sanford is ranked by MaxPreps.com as the top team in Delaware.
The other event, the 12th Annual Play-by-Play Classic at Harriton High School (Rosemont, PA), will feature four games, with the first one beginning at 12:30.
That opening matchup features Westtown and American-bound forward Yilret Yiljep taking on Life Center Academy (N.J.). Westtown is one of the more athletic teams around, with 2014 wing Jared Nickens getting a lot of Atlantic 10 offers and some high-major interest while 2015 wing Pierre Sarr has a lot of programs keeping an eye on his development.
Math, Civics, & Science High school, a powerhouse within the city and the state’s third-ranked team according to MaxPreps, will tip-off at 4 p.m. against Penn Wood. The Mighty Elephants showcase a plethora of talented and college-bound players, including Jeremiah Worthem (Robert Morris), Britton Lee (Robert Morris), and Quadir Welton (St. Peter’s).
A Central League matchup between Harriton and Radnor closes out the event with a scheduled tip-off of 5:45pm.
